Stephanie Fallon

Everyone has a story, and every story deserves to be heard. I have had the privilege of hearing many stories and assisting in the growth and development of many individuals through their challenges.

About Stephanie

Over the years, I have worked with children and adults alike in many industries; it was in this work I discovered my love for supporting others and helping them realise their potential.

I believe the role of the therapist is to create an environment where they can nurture and support the client in their exploration by drawing their attention to the patterns or themes in their lives that might require altering. In this context, the client is the expert in their own lives, and the therapist is a guide to deepening their understanding of themselves.

I have a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Post-Graduate Diploma of Counselling and an Undergraduate Degree in Philosophy and Psychology.  I also participate in regular supervision and professional development to maintain my clinical registration with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

The Role of therapy

Struggling with thoughts, feelings and behaviours is not weak, it is a response that our psychological and emotional health is rundown and in need of extra attention and care. Therapy is a space where we can safely explore challenges, develop healthy coping strategies and nurture ourselves.

Some people do not go to therapy because there is something wrong per se; the space can also be utilised for mental maintenance; a place where we can check-in, and make sure everything is operating as it should! This includes promoting healthy self-care practices, raising emotional awareness and further educating our community in order to de-stigmatise mental health.

My Therapeutic Approach

My work approach is informed by Person-Centred Therapy, however, I often utilise other therapeutic modalities. I integrate and utilise as needed; every client is individual so as I get to know them, I can customise evidence-based strategies that compliment the individual’s personality, strengths, and preferences.

My therapeutic practice is trauma-informed; I understand how traumatic experiences can impact a person’s everyday life. My role is to assist in exploring, understanding, and integrating trauma so that the individual can heal and grow.

I also believe strongly in ethical practice and cultural competence; I do not discriminate on who I will see as a client; however, if I feel it is not within my scope to assist the client, it is my responsibility to ensure they receive the appropriate assistance from another professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Counselling focuses on enhancing people’s capacity to cope with specific life challenges such as relationship endings, bereavement, and anxiety. Seeing a counsellor helps people resolve crises, reduce distress, develop goals for change and improve their wellbeing. Counselling also assists with problem-solving and developing inner resources to move on with life in meaningful ways.

How long is a piece of string? Therapy is an incredibly personal process, and it can’t be measured in time. It depends on the individual’s goals, although I can recommend a time frame based after I’ve made an assessment. Ultimately, the frequency and number of sessions will be up to you.

The first session can be nerve-wracking and anxiety-inducing, particularly if you’ve never participated in therapy before. We will take it as fast or slow as you like; the client sets the pace. You do not have to talk about anything you don’t want to! The first session is mostly about getting to know each other and establishing some expectations and goals.

I ensure a safe, secure and private environment where all matters discussed are kept confidential. However, as a counsellor in New South Wales, I am a mandatory reporter. This means I am legally and ethically required to disclose certain information to the appropriate authorities if:

> You are a danger to yourself or others

> I am subpoenaed by a court

> You have given me the approval to discuss the material with another professional or agency (for example, a lawyer, your doctor, or employer).

For more information on mandatory reporting, please visit https://www.pacfa.org.au/practitioner-resources/ethical-standards/

No, it is not necessary to get a referral before contacting me!

I require at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellation; if we can’t reschedule or change your appointment, you will be charged a cancellation fee.

Absolutely not. The relationship between the client and the therapist is extremely important; If you feel that I am not the right fit for you, then it is your right as a client to look for another therapist. I am a professional, and will not be offended! Before you choose to leave my service, please let me know so I can help you make the next steps on your therapeutic journey.

For a video-conferencing session, a stable internet connection in a private space is essential, as well as a webcam or camera and clear audio. You will require the Zoom application and an email address. We can discuss what this means when scheduling the session.

For telephone sessions, you need a secure phone line with a reliable connection.
